Apple Inc. is in early discussions with Google to integrate the tech giant’s Gemini AI into a redesigned version of Siri, according to a report by Bloomberg News.
The move signals Apple’s growing urgency to close the gap with competitors in the rapidly advancing field of generative AI.
People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Apple has approached Google about developing a custom AI model that could serve as the foundation of Siri’s next major overhaul, expected as soon as next year.
While talks remain in the early stages, Apple has not committed to using Gemini and continues to weigh whether to rely on its in-house Siri models or turn to an outside partner.
News of the potential collaboration boosted investor confidence on Friday. Alphabet’s shares rose 3.7 percent, while Apple’s stock gained 1.6 percent, both extending gains during afternoon trading following the report.
Neither company offered immediate public comment, with Google declining to address the report and Apple not responding to requests for comment.
Apple has lagged behind rivals such as Google and Samsung in introducing generative AI-powered features to their smartphones and devices.
Google has already embedded Gemini across its Pixel lineup, while Samsung’s Galaxy models feature similar advanced AI capabilities.
By comparison, Siri has struggled to keep pace with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant, often criticized for its limited ability to handle complex or multi-step tasks and weaker integration with third-party apps.
The Cupertino-based company has long promised a Siri overhaul that would allow the assistant to execute tasks based on personal context and provide more natural, full-device voice control.
That project was originally scheduled for release last spring but was pushed back by at least a year due to engineering delays.
In the meantime, Apple has reportedly held exploratory talks with other AI developers, including Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to assess whether their models could provide the capabilities needed for a revamped Siri.
Apple’s final decision is not expected for several weeks, and it remains unclear whether Gemini will ultimately power the next-generation Siri.
However, the discussions highlight Apple’s recognition of the growing importance of generative AI in consumer technology, as it faces mounting pressure to deliver innovations that rival the advancements seen across the broader smartphone and AI industries.
